Barcelona is a city with infinite options, you will never run out of places to visit, restaurants to try new and different foods, bars to enjoy and activities to have fun. But if you are going to spend a few days in the city and you want to discover a little more of the world outside of Barcelona, we suggest 7 options to choose from for a cultural getaway, to the beach, to the mountains or simply to discover different, beautiful and charming places. All of these options are just a short drive away, but if you don't have transportation, they can all be reached by public transportation as well.


MONTSERRAT


The visit to Montserrat is one of the most typical and popular. It is a very special place with incredible natural beauty, its rounded rocks create an incomparable landscape. In addition, it is also mandatory to visit the sanctuary that houses the famous Virgin of Montserrat, also known as "La Moreneta" (La Morenita) for her skin color.


How to get?

The easiest way to get there is by car, it takes about 1 hour, but you can also opt for public transport:

  • Train: take the R5 line in Plaça de Espanya, to Montserrat-Aeri if you want to take the cable car and go up "flying", or to Monistrol if you prefer to go up with the emblematic rack railway.

  • Bus: from a street near Sants station (Viriat street), the Autocares Julià company makes the journey daily.

SITGES


Sitges is a coastal town very close to Barcelona, full of life and incredible beauty. In its historic center, full of shops, bars and restaurants of all kinds, you will also find some of the most photographable corners.


How to get?

By car, it takes just under an hour to get there taking the C-32 heading south. You can also use the R2S train from Sants, which takes about 40 minutes to get there.


PENEDES - WINERY


For lovers of wine tourism, this is the perfect excursion. El Penedés is the Catalan region of cava and wine, here there are a large number of wineries and cavas. The Freixenet cellar is one of the best known. However, if you prefer wine, Bodega Torres is very popular and offers a spectacular wine and cheese pairing. You can organize a visit to a winery or cava, as you prefer, and thus discover Catalan wine tourism.




FIGUERES - MUSEU DALÍ

Figueres is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí and currently houses the Dalí Theatre-Museum . If you like the artist and want to discover one of the most peculiar museums in the world, this is your ideal excursion. In addition, you can take the opportunity to taste a good menu or some tapas during your visit to the small city.


How to get?

By car you can get there in an hour and a half, more or less. But, the fastest means of transport to get there is by train, since there is a high-speed train (AVE) that connects both cities in just 55 minutes.



TOSSA DE MAR - COSTA BRAVA


Tossa de Mar is one of the most beautiful destinations on the Costa Brava. Its old town is surrounded by an impressive wall: it is the only fortified city that remains on the Catalan coast. On this excursion you will be able to enjoy an incredible landscape, in addition to being able to take a dip in its large square or in one of its coves (Cala Pola, Cala Bona, Cala Futadera, Cala Giverola)


How to get?

From Barcelona it takes about an hour to get to Tossa de Mar. You can also get there by bus, from Estación del Norte there is a direct bus that takes about an hour and twenty minutes to get there.



GIRONA


With its medieval streets and pretty river views, it's a wonderful day trip from Barcelona. For Game of Thrones fans, here you can discover some of the places where parts of the series were filmed. Here you can discover a route through the locations of Game of Thrones.


It is also a big city in Catalunya, but very different compared to the busy Barcelona. The Pont de les Peixateries Velles was designed by Gustav Eiffel, the famous architect of the Eiffel Tower.


The best time to visit Girona is in May, for the Temps de Flors festival, when the streets are decorated with flowers, although it is also one of the busiest times of the year.


How to get?

The best option to get to Girona is with the high-speed train (AVE), which takes only 40 minutes to cover the distance between the two cities. You can also get there by car, but it is an hour and a half away.



BESALU & RUPIT I PRUIT


They are two small medieval towns located on the outskirts of Barcelona, which make an excellent day trip from the city if you want to enjoy history and nature.


In Besalú you cannot miss its beautiful 12th century Romanesque bridge over the Fluvia river. And, in Rupit, the best thing you can do is cross its suspension bridge, get lost in its picturesque stone streets and take tons of photos at every corner.


How to get?

If you want to do this excursion on your own, the most convenient is to use the car. Besalú is an hour and a half away by car and from Besalú to Rupit there is an hour.
